Hiking the Taconic Range

Naugatuck State Forest, West Block

The West Block of the Naugatuck State Forest is a wonderland of old roads, trails, reservoirs and cliffs.  Practically no trails or dirt roads are marked though.  The map provided by the Connecticut State Parks and Forests website is detailed, but there are so many other unmarked trails (made from hunters), that following the map can be confusing.  Wild concord grapes, blackberries and raspberries can be found if you know where to look.  Views through the intersecting power lines can be beautiful and eerie at the same time.  The noise from the rifle range in the ravine is unsettling.  Bring a compass and a contour map and/or printouts from Google Earth.  The cliffs are dangerous and may be very hard to find.
