Hiking the Taconic Range

Canaan Mountain is easily visible from Route 7 in North Canaan, and so are its cliffs on the southwest slope.  A photo of Canaan Mountain is shown on the Mt. Prospect page of this site.  You can get to cliffs by trail, but don't expect to succeed on the first attempt.  Unmarked trails cover the entire area.  A few lead to nowhere.  There is one that goes around the west side and eventually reaches the top.  You can continue to descend on the east side if you don't mind following a partially cleared trail.  There are a few lookouts from the cliffs toward Massachusetts and the Housatonic River region.  All lookouts are dangerous.  You can park at Beckley Furnace.
